Peter Ponzio, the author of Children of the Night, is a CPA with over 30 years experience in Corporate Finance, holding positions as divergent as Treasurer, VP of Sales Administration, Vice President of IT, and General Manager of an internet start-up company in the late 1990s, and CFO at a subsidiary of a Fortune 100 company.
The novel, Children of the Night was inspired, in part, from the wave of financial scandals that started at the beginning of the new century. While much has been written on these scandals, very little was written from the point of view of the everyday people affected by the corruption that was exposed at Enron, WorldCom, Adelphia Communication, Tyco and other companies..
In the past year, we've been presented with new disclosures on mortgage banking and lending. People are now clamoring for increased regulation and oversight--in many cases, the same people who preached that de-regulation was beneficial for the economy. Regulation, in and of itself, is not a bad thing--it's just that the government so often gets it wrong. Maybe it would be better if we enforced the laws that we already have on the books, and ensure that people who try to circumvent our laws are brought to justice.
It seems that as the economy deteriorates, more people are being affected by the financial decisions that have led to the failure of many firms --both on Wall Street and Main Street--and which make up one of the primary themes of the novel Children of the Night. Now, more than ever, this novel is relevant on many levels.
A few people have asked me why I chose the name Children of the Night: the book has nothing to do with vampires or street children. The title is based on a poem by Edward Arlington Robinson called "Children of the Night." I especially like one stanza at the end of the poem that asks that we throw off darkness and become children of the light. It seemed like a good theme for a book about taking action against scandals that seemed to be in headlines on a daily basis for the past few years.
Since developing the web site, I've added short stories, essays, an unpublished novella, and white papers to complement the information on the novel, Children of the Night. Please visit the Poems and Short Stories and Essays pages as well s the Technology White Paper sections for new additions.
