Children of the Night
The story begins when Richard Elliott and Jude Levy, both auditors at the large Chicago accounting firm of Phelps McAllister, discover that their client has engaged in improper accounting practices which compels them to disclose. Their action results in the death of Richard and allows their client to remain a high-flier in the stock market. Twenty years later, Jude Levy and Richard’s son, William, find themselves engaged in an audit with the same client, but this time the stakes are higher, and the scandal more far-reaching. Will the two auditors be able to bring their abusive client to justice or will they ultimately fail? Only time can tell.
Inspired by the recent wave of accounting scandals and the failure of Arthur Andersen & Co., Children of the Night brings to readers a realistic portrayal of greed, corruption and desperation that exist in the financial industry. Though it is a work of fiction, the story provides a glimpse of the human side of the business and how people’s lives are affected by events that happen beyond their control.Dreams Deferred
A collection of eight short stories, set in a Chicago neighborhood in the nineteen-sixties. The neighborhood depicted in the stories is a place where no one lived permanently: “no one grew up in this area; they just came here while they waited to make more money and move to one of the better neighborhoods, or held on for awhile before descending to a worse neighborhood.”
Like the poem Harlem, these stories ask the question – “What happens to a dream deferred?” In some cases, the dream is shattered by the harsh realities of life in the city; in others, redemption seems possible. The common thread that binds these stories lies beyond the neighborhood, however. As the narrator of “Teach Your Children” relates at the end of the collection: “David was right; sometimes you can take the anger, the bitterness and the disappointment, and make something beautiful grow from them. Oh, and one other thing; everyone has a disability, some just happen to have theirs on the inside.”
